I do not believe in same sex marriage. Who wants a marriage where the sex is always the same?
But seriously: I don’t believe much in the government sanctioning gay marriage or giving benefits thereto, but that’s because I don’t believe it’s their place to do so in any marriage. There should be no tax incentive for married couples — each should pay their own way in accordance with their income. Allowing marriage to become a “tax shelter” demeans the institution far more than allowing two people of the same gender to marry does.
But the simple inalienable truth here is that if two people are happy together, the rest of the world should butt out. Surely I don’t think we’d have tarnished the sanctity of Brittney Spears’ 36-hour marriage to Justin Timberlake, or of any of Drew Peterson’s marriages.
I really hope the California Supreme Court upholds Proposition 8, however, because then we can take it to the Supreme Court of the United States. If it gets struck down there, it gets struck down everywhere.
But with all the battles I’m fighting these days, this one just isn’t that high on my list of priorities. Besides, nobody’s ever wanted to marry me anyway. If I get a proposal from the right person, I might change my mind.
Here’s a stupid question: If DOMA is the Defense of Marriage Act, why doesn’t it outlaw divorce?
