It’s your body and it’s your life. What you do with these is your business. I personally have mixed feelings on the subject of abortion, and do not consider it something I need to have an opinion on: as a man I cannot become pregnant, and as a gay man I will not get a woman pregnant. But if forced to make a decision, I have to default to the woman’s rights. Except in cases of rape, the father should have a say, but ultimately the decision must rest with the mother; after all, she’s the one who will have to carry the thing around for nine months, and often ends up raising it alone.
As for euthanasia, I have a fancy legal document that outlines what I want done — and don’t want done — should I become too incapacitated to make my own medical decisions. Jim has accepted that responsibility, and when the time comes, I hope he’ll be up to it. He might just be called upon to pull the plug.
I was talking to another good friend recently about another real possibility, that being that when the time comes — and it’s no time soon — it might be by my own hand. If my health were to become desperate enough with no hope of return, I might choose that option. My friend even offered to help if it came to that, but I turned him down. I couldn’t ask someone to do that. But it will be my choice, and I just ask that nobody stand in my way. I’ll try not to leave a mess to clean up.
