In 2005, I decided that I would go home to New Orleans for Christmas. It had been almost ten years, so I was long overdue for a visit. So I logged in to Travelocity and booked my airfare to New Orleans. Not a minute after I clicked the mouse to finalize my ticket purchase, my roommate came to my bedroom door. “Matt, you better see this. There’s a Category 5 hurricane heading right for New Orleans.”
Sure enough, there was, and while Katrina weakened some before she made landfall, she still made a mess of the city I call home. Somehow, I still managed to pull off my trip. While I was there, I toured the ruins of the most devastated areas: Lakeview and the Lower Ninth Ward. I also went back to the house that I grew up in to see what was left of it. Four months had passed since the storm, but the city was still a shambles.
This video commemorates that trip, and my tour of the devastation.
