The battle between science and religion is nothing new. It dates back to the 17th Century, when Galileo was imprisoned for heresy when he theorized that the earth travels around the sun, which is in direct contradiction to scripture verses which state, “the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.” (Psalms 93:1) and “The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.” (Ecclesiastes 1:5) So here we have this heathen scientist preaching heliocentrism, the theory that the sun stays put and the earth travels around it. Heresy! Send for the inquisition! In 1996 Galileo was “rehabilitated” by the Catholic Church. (In this context, rehabilitate means to undo an excommunication.)

One More Reason To Celebrate
One of the biggest events of the holiday season, for me, is the annual holiday party thrown by Dr. Stan Hill, the beloved Artistic Director of the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus. This year was no exception, although there was the addition of one more reason to celebrate. My plan was to greet everyone with my Latin greeting for Saturnalia – “Io, Saturnalia!” – but instead I ended up wishing everybody a “Happy Repeal Day.”
I wonder if the repeal of prohibition elicited this level of celebration? Probably this and more, as they wrote songs about that one. (The one that comes to mind is “Cocktails For Two” originally sung by Carl Brisson and …
