I’m about to pass the two-week mark since I began my cancer treatments. The first round of chemotherapy wasn’t as bad as I expected. The hair on my head has stayed put, though I did have some skin problems as a side effect of the 5-fluorouracil, mostly little sores that appeared mainly in areas that have hair follicles: the beard zone and my eyebrows. Sometimes they crust over with dried blood, other times with a straw-colored granular substance which I think is dried blood plasma. Either way, these lesions disappeared after about a week, and the nurses (as well as Jim) have noticed that my face is clearing up.

Meet my boyfriend. His name is Ray. His full name is Ray D. Ation. I spend about 20 minutes every day, Monday thru Friday, in his arms. The two projections on the side fold out and surround me, while the whole contraption revolves around, taking CT scans and zapping me with high doses of radiation. I can’t wait for March 15th, the day he becomes – if all proceeds as scheduled – my ex Ray. (Insert groan here.)
Cancer treatment is hell. Sometimes I catch myself wishing I could just die and get it over with, though I’m trying to chase off these thoughts as soon as they cross my mind. Jim has an idea to keep me going: he’s taking me to DisneyWorld …

It’s a horrific day in Minneapolis and its environs today. It’s been snowing on and off and we had some freezing rain last night. It’s exactly the kind of day when I don’t want to be on the road, so I really have to take my hat off (well, put it on first, then take it off) to the brave home care nurse who made her way through this winter wasteland to come disconnect my infuser now that it’s done its job.
