Giving a speech at an event such as last night’s memorial in Tucson following the tragic shooting rampage of Jared Lee Loughner – a name not even mentioned during the proceedings – is kind of like walking across a frozen lake in Minnesota this time of year. Hazards are all around, and in many places the ice is so thin that nobody in their right mind should tread there, lest they fall through into an icy, watery grave. In writing about the shooting in Tucson yesterday, it is hard not to draw comparisons to another day that galvanized the American people as we all sat glued to our television sets in shock and horror. I refer of course, to that black September Tuesday in 2001 when militant terrorists tried to bring this country to its knees with a horrific and unspeakable act of violence and terrorism. There was at least one happy event that day, in that it was the day that a little girl was born. Her name was Christina Taylor Greene, born on September 11, 2001. The battle between science and religion is nothing new. It dates back to the 17th Century, when Galileo was imprisoned for heresy when he theorized that the earth travels around the sun, which is in direct contradiction to scripture verses which state, “the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.” (Psalms 93:1) and “The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.” (Ecclesiastes 1:5) So here we have this heathen scientist preaching heliocentrism, the theory that the sun stays put and the earth travels around it. Heresy! Send for the inquisition! In 1996 Galileo was “rehabilitated” by the Catholic Church. (In this context, rehabilitate means to undo an excommunication.)
