The Catholics have elected a new pope, the 266th person to hold the office. There have been six since I was born under the reign of John XXIII, including John Paul I who served for only 33 days back in 1978. I was always a little wary of that one; he died awfully soon after his election, and I can’t imagine the cardinals would elect a pontiff who obviously has one foot in the grave. Probably one of the greatest lines in the history of cinema was spoken by Roger Rabbit in the 1988 classic about who framed him: “If you don’t have a good sense of humor, you’re better off dead.” No one is more aware of this than the writers of Saturday Night Live. While their comedy often misses the mark, sometimes by light-years, they aren’t afraid to offend because let’s face it, even a knock-knock joke is going to offend somebody.

It’s been a busy week out there in the real world. We all woke Monday morning to the “earth-shattering” breaking news that Pope Benedict XVI, the former Joseph Ratzinger, was stepping down as Pope. (Yawn.) Of course, the Facebook memes are flying fast and furious, including one I put out there myself (right). If you’re going to run that through Google Translate, remember that in the Latin alphabet, there was no letter U. (They used the letter V instead.) I’ll save you the trouble, though: it’s Latin for GOOD RIDDANCE!
