It’s Not Too Soon … It’s Too Late!

“We’ve endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years. And each time I learn the news, I react not as a president, but as anybody else would as a parent. And that was especially true today. I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do. The majority of those who died today were children – beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. They had their entire lives ahead of them – birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams.”

My Congressional Wish List

The election is over, glory hallelujah! We can all settle down now and go back to our lives while the attack ads disappear from our television screens, replaced by commercials for Viagra and Perfect Meatloaf pans. (I bought one; they really do work!)

This was probably one of the messiest, ugliest, dirtiest election cycles in the history of democracy. Outside influences muddied the water so much that the Average Joe in the voting booth on Tuesday morning had a hard time sorting out fact from falsehood. War of the Words

“Words! Words! Words! I’m so sick of words! I get words all day through; first from him, now from you! Is that all you blighters can do?” (Alan Jay Lerner, My Fair Lady)

I’m hearing a lot of Republicans, mostly younger ones who didn’t pay attention in civics class, flouting this passage from the United States Constitution these days:

“The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on application of the legislature, or of the executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.” (Article IV Section 4; italics mine)
