Super Sunday

New Orleans I can imagine that back in my hometown New Orleans, things are getting pretty crazy right about now. For one thing, it’s the season. Carnival is in full swing, leading up to Mardi Gras, which is next Tuesday (February 16). The bars are hopping, the hotels are packed, and the streets are full of revellers in a city where you can drink in the streets. But this year there’s something different in the air. It’s not the gloom and doom felt by those residents still shell-shocked from Hurricane Katrina. No, this year the Mardi Gras is inflused with the excitement of a city full of football fans as their underdog team closes in on the brass ring within its reach. After today, carnival will probably seem anti-climactic.

Most of the talking heads I’ve heard on television are giving this game to the Saints. I’m certainly hoping they win … yes, I’ve gotten caught up in the home town fever. I’ll be watching the game tonight, wearing the Saints shirt my mother sent me. Fortnately, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters aren’t on tonight, so any arguments between my roommate and I have been averted.

Who Dat?

One positive omen that has been reported is an high school friend of mine who still lives in New Orleans found a cold, wet, hungry stray kitty on his doorstep. Her markings were the same colors as a New Orleans Saints uniform. So he took her in, fed her, and gave her a good home. And of course, he named her “Who Dat”.

Brody’s got a little “Who Dat” in him as well. He’s a black cat with gold eyes. And he’s good luck, so I just know the Saints are going to win.

So yes, I’m hyped for the Big Game. The kickoff is at 5:30 local time. Time to break out the chips and salsa and pretzels and beer. Actually, Minnesota liquor stores are closed on Sunday; better make it root beer.

Tomorrow I go back to loathing football, so for today … Geaux Saints.
